Hawaii State Art Museum/HISAM
HISAM celebrates Hawaii's rich and diverse cultural and historical legacy while showcasing the state's thriving arts community through exhibits and events. Current shows include Printmaking (through 1/18) which features prints from the Art in Public Space Collection and Scale, a show contrasting small- and large-scale artworks. HISAM participates in Downtown Honolulu Chinatown's monthly First Friday art gallery walk by staying open late 6-9 pm and featuring musical performances. The monthly Second Saturday 11 am-3 pm is a free hands-on, make-and-take art activity for all ages. Meet the Artist art lunch presentations take place every last Tuesday of the month. Honolulu Museum of Art/HoMA
Honolulu Museum of Art presents international caliber special exhibits and features a diverse collection of European, American, Hawaiian, and Asian art. This fall, HoMA will host Abstract Expressionism: Looking East from the Far West (9/7/17-1/21/18), a fresh look at mid-20th century abstraction through a reconsideration of its Asian-American practitioners, with special focus on artists active in Hawaii. Other exhibits include Shahzia Sikander: Parallax (through 7/30/17), an immersive video installation, and Global Warming: Quilts, Coverlets and Blankets (5/18-9/17/17). At Spalding House, HoMA's second location in the hills above Honolulu, HoMA Select (6/25/17) is a small exhibit of some of the museum's very best artwork. The HoMA Select Shuttle Tour is a free docent-led tour of this exhibit at both of the museum sites Tuesdays 1-3:30 pm (through 6/20/17).

Bishop Museum
Founded in 1899 by Charles Bishop in memory of his wife, Bernice Pauahi Bishop, a royal descendant of King Kamehameha I, Bishop Museum is a treasure trove of the natural history, culture, and peoples of Hawaii and the Pacific. The museum brings this vast region to life with fascinating permanent and special exhibits such as Hulia Ano: Inspired Patterns (through 10/16/17) which explores visual patterns found in Hawaiian artistry and nature. The exhibit showcases a stunning array of cultural and natural objects drawn from the museum's vast collections, everything from kappa (bark) cloth and print gourds to plant specimens and sea shells. To highlight modern expressions of pattern making, Bishop Museum partnered with five contemporary Hawaii artists who created new works for this exhibit. Interactive stations allow visitors to creative their own designs inspired by the exhibit. And on Tuesday-Thursday from 1-3 pm in the Hawaiian Hall Atrium, visitors can try their hand at traditional Hawaiian printing using stamps and inks and create a keepsake to take home.

The ARTS at Marks Garage
This non-profit community arts center in the downtown Chinatown neighborhood hosts major multidisciplinary exhibits, performances, lectures, screenings, workshops, and classes for neighborhood youth. The ARTS was also a primary sponsor of the creative revitalization of the surrounding area. Upcoming exhibits and events include Contemporary Photography in Hawaii (6/1-16/17), Sailor Jerry Festival (6/16/17-7/30/17), Hawaii Shakespeare Festival (7/14/17-8/20/17), and Hawaii Watercolor Society: Little Pictures Show (8/29/17-9/30/17). Hokulea Return Ceremony, June 1, 2017
After sailing 40,000 nautical miles around the world over the last three years on the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage, the voyaging canoe Hokulea returns to Hawaii. Hokulea will make her historic return to Magic Island accompanied by eight other voyaging canoes from Hawaii and the Pacific on June 1 at 8:30 am. A cultural welcoming ceremony will take place 10 am-noon followed by an afternoon (noon – 5 pm) celebration featuring entertainment, video highlights of the journey, and speakers from the worldwide voyage.
40th Annual Prince Lot Hula Festival, July 15-16, 2017
What's more uniquely Hawaiian than experiencing the state's largest non-competitive hula exhibition in spectacular Moanlua Gardens? The event honors Prince Lot Kapuaiwa who brought back the once forbidden hula in the 19th century. The two-day festival features hula halau (hula schools) performances and Native Hawaiian crafts, cultural demonstrations, and traditional Hawaiian games.

Aloha Festivals showcases and perpetuates Hawaii's music, dance, history, heritage, and cultural traditions. The 2017 Aloha Festivals celebrates the love for Hawaii's children and future with the theme, "Hei Lei Aloha Ke Keiki: Children Are Our Garland of Love." The Hapa Haole Hula Festival and Competition will feature a celebration of hula and the hapa haole era of Hawaiian music which gained popularity from the turn of the 20th century through the early 1940s and beyond. The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing returns to the North Shore of Oahu for the men's series and women's Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach. The parade takes place on the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. Parade starts at 7pm at Fort DeRussy in Waikiki and proceeds down Kalakaua Avenue, to Kapiolani Park.

Each winter the world's best big wave surfers are invited to Waimea Bay on Oahu's North Shore to compete in the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational In Memory of Eddie Aikau. The Eddie can only be held when surf measures at least 20 feet (Hawaiian scale) for a full day. The holding period for the event is between December 1 and the last day in February.
