Discover Maui in a whole new way.
Discover Maui in a whole new way.
Don't just visit Maui, truly experience all it has to offer. Take a journey into the history and stunning natural beauty of Hana and Upcountry Maui. Come and find yourself in an island paradise you'll never forget. Read on.
Centuries ago, Hana was a bustling community. Thousands of Native Hawaiians lived along the coastline in this isolated village. Sugar cane was introduced to the Hana area in the mid-1800s followed by cattle ranching, which kept the town thriving for a century. When the last plantation closed down after World War II, the population dwindled as people sought employment on the other side of Maui. In 1946, the owner of Hana Ranch founded the Kauiki Inn to attract tourists, which evolved into the celebrated Hotel Hana Maui.
Today, Hana is renowned for its friendly community and small town ambiance. A journey to East Maui offers visitors and residents a rare opportunity to revitalize and connect with one of Maui's authentically Hawaiian places.
Road To Hana
The Road to Hana is a National Heritage Trail, meandering over 52 miles, 617 curves and 56 bridges, many of which are only one lane wide. East Maui's natural rainforest beauty unfolds as you drive past cascading waterfalls and clear pools, traverse lush canopies over deep valleys and under steep cliffs. Photo opportunities are endless on this scenic byway, heightening your senses. Make stops along the way to enjoy the forested state parks, arboretums and spectacular vistas from overlooks. There are botanical gardens to explore and roadside farm stands from which to enjoy tropical fruits and banana bread.
On the way into Hana, Waianapanapa State Park offers camping in public cabins and picnic areas on a beautiful black sand beach with a trail that leads to lava caves. Turn onto Ulaino Road and explore the volcanic underground world of the lava tube cave system.
As you enter Hana, check out picturesque Hana Bay guarded by the Kauiki Hill cinder cone. Visit Hana Cultural Center & Museum for historical insights to the area, and browse for crafts made by local artisans. Take a stroll through the luxurious Travaasa Hana resort and enjoy a beverage or spa experience. Shop for gifts at the resort's art gallery or visit boutiques in the Hana Town Center for made-in-Maui items. Between Hana's Beach Park and Community Center, you'll find multi-ethnic cuisine in food trucks and pop-up bistros.
Hana Waterfall
Join the local conversation at Hasegawa General Store and Hana Ranch Store, both of which carry provisions. Beyond Hana, the highway ventures south and you'll come across quaint plantation style homes overlooking the sea. Famed Hamoa Beach features a scenic cove with sparkling black sand, white water surf and shaded picnic facilities. For more information on Hana visit the Maui website at gohawaii.com/maui.

Climbing the volcanic slopes of Haleakala, you'll start noticing the difference in landscape and climate from the leeward coastlines. Expanses of green pastures are punctuated with towering stands of eucalyptus trees, temperatures drop by several degrees and low clouds bring moisture to the air. The combination of fertile volcanic soil and cool, damp weather has given rise to a bounty of produce, herb and flower farms.
Small upcountry farms cultivate Maui onions, Kula strawberries, pineapple and coffee, to name a few, along with exotic protea and fragrant lavender flowers.
Upcountry is a perfect match for agricultural tours on the island. You can visit Maui's only remaining pineapple growing and packing consortium and sample the King of Fruits in Haliimaile. In the arid ranch land of Omaopio, dairy goats graze where goat cheese is made; organic vodka is produced from local sugar cane and bottled on site. In upper Kula, explore an organic lavender farm and indulge in lavender botanicals; try a farm-to-table gather and dine tour; browse botanical gardens filled with colorful protea flowers and view strawberry fields that go on forever.
Upcountry Maui
Head southwest from Keokea to Ulupalakua on a curving two-lane road that offers panoramic views to West Maui, Lanai and Kahoolawe. You'll reach an oasis of majestic trees that's home to Maui's only winery. The historic buildings go back to the time of King Kalakaua and Hawaii's first rodeo cowboys. Wine tasting and vineyard tours are available.
Upcountry Maui Shops
Eco-tours are featured in the form of zipline and tree canopy adventures on the middle slopes of Haleakala and at a working cattle ranch. There are also numerous mountain-hiking trails in the Waihou Spring Forest Reserve and Polipoli Springs State Recreation Area. You'll see pine forests, groves of native trees like koa and halapepe, stands of cypress, cedar and eucalyptus along with a redwood forest.
For experienced bicyclists, mountain biking trails traverse the countryside. Downhill biking from the summit of Haleakala is a true thrill ride offered by several bike companies. Paragliding off the mountain and over forest canopies is a must-do for adventure seekers. From the upper forests to the lower fields, a trip to Upcountry is another way to connect with the nature of Maui. For more details on Upcountry go to the Maui website at gohawaii.com/maui.

Aloha Maui Insider,
I am looking forward to my Maui visit. I believe there is a reservation system for viewing the sunrise at Haleakala? And perhaps a change in the per-person fees as well? Thank you for assisting us with our questions.
Best Regards, Sally from Seattle
Aloha Sally,
As of February 2017, to view sunrise at Haleakala National Park, you need to make a sunrise viewing reservation ahead of time at recreation.gov. The online reservation system will help to provide a quality experience at the summit during sunrise hours (3am to 7am). The cost is $1.50 per car. The one-day sunrise reservation will not be sold at the park but is available online, up to 60 days ahead of the date of your sunrise visit. On June 1, 2017, the Haleakala National Park daily entrance fee was raised to meet national standards for parks with similar visitor amenities. The 2017 per-person fee was changed from $10 to $12. For more information about Haleakala and the new sunrise reservation system please visit the park website at nps.gov/hale or call 808-572-4400.

Dear Maui Insider,
Are new flights offered by Hawaiian Airlines on the west side of Maui?
Sincerely, Kathy and Brian
Aloha Kathy and Brian,
Ohana by Hawaiian started service with its 48-seat ATR-42 turboprop aircraft from Kapalua in March of 2017. Two round trip flights are offered daily from JHM (Kapalua Airport) to HNL (Honolulu International Airport) and one flight daily is offered from JHM to OGG (Kahului Airport). For more information or to book flights please go to hawaiianairlines.com.

Hello Maui Insider,
We are planning on going swimming while we are on Maui. We want to protect our skin from the sun during our time in the ocean. Is there a type of sunscreen we can wear that is eco-friendly?
Yours truly, Shelly and Randy
Aloha Shelly and Randy,
The most eco-friendly sun protection is a hat, sunglasses and long sleeved shirt or rash guard. While no sunscreen has been proven to be completely ‘reef-friendly,' those with titanium oxide or zinc oxide, which are natural mineral ingredients, have not been found harmful to corals. For more detailed information on coral and sunscreen, you can read a flyer from the National Park Service at cdhc.noaa.gov (PDF link).

The postcard-perfect view is just the icing because locals and visitors have been frequenting Sarento's on the Beach for more than 16 years for its delicious Mediterranean cuisine focused on the freshest local seafood and produce, award-winning service and team members that have been at the restaurant since it opened.
Sarento's on the Beach is open daily from 7am to 10pm offering a daily brunch menu until 3pm, happy hour from 3 to 5:30pm and dinner from 5:30 to 10pm.
One of the favorite lunch items is the Sarento's Burger that comes with grilled onion, sharp cheddar, bacon-mushroom marmalade with an addicting, delicious yuzu aioli. Executive chef Geno Sarmiento shares his recipe below:
Chef's Corner - Sarento's Burger
Sarento's Burger
Burger Patties:
• 2 pounds Kobe ground beef
• 1½ cups bread crumbs
• 2 ounces evaporated milk
• 3 ounces Worcestershire sauce
• 1 clove garlic minced
• 1 egg
• Dash of cayenne pepper and salt
Gently mix all the ingredients above and then mold into four equal patties, 8 ounces each.
Yuzu Parmesan Aioli:
• 3 egg yolks
• ¼ cup yuzu
• 1 cup parmesan cheese
• 1 tbsp whole grain mustard
• 2 cups olive oil
• 1 clove garlic minced
• Salt and pepper to taste
Blend all ingredients, except for the olive oil, in a food processor, medium speed. Slowly, add the olive oil until emulsified.
Mushroom Marmalade:
• 10 ounces button and shitake mushrooms sliced
• 2 ounces unsalted butter
• 1 ounce shallots minced
• 1 ounce chicken stock
• 1 ounce honey
• Dash of soy sauce, tarragon and white balsamic vinegar
Instructions:
Sauté bacon over medium heat until almost crispy. Add mushrooms, shallots and butter and sauté until shallots are translucent. Add chicken stock, shoyu, honey, balsamic vinegar, tarragon and chives and reduce until it's a syrup consistency.
Once all the three components above are completed, you're ready to build the burgers. Start with a Kaiser roll (or any bread you prefer), arugula, sliced beefsteak tomato, a slice of sharp cheddar, mushroom marmalade, yuzu-parmesan aioli and crispy onions.
