Shearwater Tavern
|
|
The latest offering from acclaimed Chef-Restaurateur DK Kodama, Shearwater Tavern is named after Hawaii's revered seabird, uau kani (wedge-tailed shearwater) who returns to the same burrow on shore each year to raise one chick per pair. Similarly with this inviting gastro-pub, Chef DK welcomes patrons like family so that they return many times. The restaurant ambiance is modern industrial with warm woods and brewpub brick over the full-service bar.

But it's the outstanding food made with locally sourced, sustainable ingredients that will have you coming back for more. If you're in the mood for comfort food with craft beers and cocktails, you'll be impressed with the selection of starters: Crispy Whole Chicken Wings are dry-rubbed in herbs and fried then served with a sassy sriracha sauce. Oven Roasted Bone Marrow is a ragout made with short ribs and roasted tomatoes, served with crostini. A dish from the "more than just veggies" section will make your taste buds pop, like the Roasted Moroccan Spiced Baby Carrots and Beets with cumin-infused aioli, pine nuts and goat cheese.

Already a "must-have" favorite, Truffled Mac & Cheese is heavenly, featuring penne pasta in garlic cream and aged white cheddar with mushrooms and prosciutto. Fork & Salad

Next-door to Shearwater Tavern in Kihei is another latest offering from three of Maui's most popular chefs, Jaron Blosser, Cody Christopher and Travis Morrin of Three's Bar and Grill. They aim to expand the farm-to-table movement in Maui, boosting the economy and making healthy, local and convenient cuisine accessible to all. Their Fork & Salad eatery covers those criteria with ease. When you walk up to the expansive salad bar and open kitchen, you can't help noticing how fresh and healthy the food looks.

From freshly harvested greens like kale, arugula and spinach in wood boxes to a colorful array of produce such as strawberries, spicy broccoli and kabocha squash, the choices to build-your-own-salad are nearly overwhelming. The chefs also offer their signature salads, which are creatively combined and can be placed in a wrap to go.

|
Sandwiches are hearty and served on locally made, organic sourdough focaccia with a small spring mix salad. Soups include Tomato Bisque and New England style Clam Chowder. There's a juice bar, too. Tin Roof Maui
|
|
Chef Sheldon Simeon left the spotlight of Top Chef TV and the restaurant kitchens of Star Noodle and Migrant Maui to open his very own “mom and pop” lunch place with his wife, Janet. With Tin Roof Maui they have come full circle and back home to their roots, working closely with local farmers, fishermen and ranchers to bring Hawaii's favorite plantation style, Filipino inspired dishes to the community. From the day Tin Roof opened its doors, it has been packed with the happy faces of residents and visitors grinding Chef Sheldon's fresh, local fare.

The main section of the menu is known as Kau Kau Tins. These were aluminum pots divided into sections, stacked and covered for carrying plantation worker meals into the field. In the restaurant, these are bowls filled with white or brown rice and a main dish, such as the popular Mochiko Chicken with its crispy crust, savory Chop Steak and Garlic Scrimps (large prawns). You can request kale salad or Asian noodles as the base instead of rice. Add a “dime bag” on top for some crunchy seasoning or try a side of ulu (breadfruit) mac salad.

Vegetarians will enjoy the beautifully presented beets and kale in a box. Mum Mums (sweets) include Bibingka (chocolate cake with colored sprinkles) and Pono Pies (made from breadfruit). Paia Fish Market Front Street

Lahaina's newest go-to place for casual dining is Paia Fish Market on Front Street across from the landmark Banyan Tree. Owners Moonstar Greene and Yuri Soledade built their reputation for "fresh local fish delivered and served daily with aloha" in the plantation town of Paia. Island fish selections like mahi mahi, 'ono, ahi, snapper and opah are also available daily at the Front Street restaurant.

Get your favorite fish as a charbroiled burger served with crunchy coleslaw and house made tartar sauce, or in a fresh catch plate either grilled, sautéed, Cajun spiced or blackened. The fish soft tacos made with a Maui corn tortilla are delicious and come with home fries. Other plates include quesadillas, fajitas, fish and chips, shrimp or calamari and chips.

Seafood Pasta features fish, scallops and shrimp sautéed with garlic, wine and cream. Salads made with organic greens or romaine in a garden or Caesar style is also available. Beach Bums BBQ & Island Grill

Blues and BBQ — you can't go wrong with that combination. As you enter this sleek, stylish Napili restaurant, you first notice the mouthwatering smell of barbecue in a smoker and the rhythmic sounds of blues music from a state-of-the-art sound system. Beach Bums made a name for itself as Maui's premier barbecue restaurant in Maalaea. Its new West Maui location features an all-wood smoker built in Mesquite, Texas.

Meats are covered with house made sauces or secret dry rubs and smoked slowly until they melt in the mouth. Choose from racks of baby backs or spare ribs, brisket, pulled pork, herb-roasted drunken chicken and smoked turkey. They're served with two sides in your choice of baked beans, brown rice, coleslaw, cornbread, fries or mac salad. Hand-cut sweet potato fries are a house favorite and served with a choice of dipping sauces.

Sandwiches like the Smoked French Dip with melted Swiss cheese on sourdough; Smokehouse Chicken breast with pepper jack cheese, onion strings and jalapenos or Mahi Mango Wrap with grilled mahi mahi, fresh pesto, carrots and spring mix in a tortilla are a few of the delectable lunch offerings. Kahoma Ranch ATV Tours
|
|
High in the West Maui Mountains is a pristine, narrow valley known as Kahoma. It's filled with lush vegetation, a freshwater stream and reservoir. It's also crisscrossed by red dirt roads with cattle grazing in fields that offer a panoramic view of the blue Pacific and island of Lanai. This is a good place for an ATV adventure and Kahoma Ranch guides will get you there.

Climb in a two-person Polaris Ranger all terrain vehicle and drive the rugged dirt roads up and down hills and around hairpin turns. You may even see a steer or wild pig crossing your path, but no matter what, the views are spectacular. At the end of the ride, take a refreshing dip in the stream-fed reservoir or just kick back on the wooden dock.

The mid-morning and afternoon tours can be combined with a stop on the wet-and-wild waterslides and swimming in the pond. Ask if the slides have reopened. Proflyght Paragliding
|
|
Soar above the clouds that grace the high mountain slopes of Haleakala. Paragliding (sky gliding with a modified parachute) is at once serene and stimulating and makes you feel like you are connected to the sky. Proflyght Paragliding is Maui's only certified tandem flight activity. You fly with an instructor in a tandem harness with a running takeoff from the Waipoli Flight Park.

|
Air currents lift the parachute as your feet leave the ground. Soon, you're flying with birds up to 3,000 feet, gliding across Haleakala's slopes of forest and pastures. The views from this perspective are nothing short of awe-inspiring, reaching across the channel to picturesque West Maui.
|
|
You'll be amazed at the lack of noise and the ease with which your instructor maneuvers through the air. Touching down is as simple as the takeoff. Tandem flights are offered every morning. Rappel Maui
|
|
Canyoneering and all that it entails, including hiking, scrambling, climbing, rappelling and finally, swimming, is Rappel Maui's specialty. Imagine walking through a scenic botanical garden in the rainforest and hiking to the top of a jungle cliff. You'll start your rappelling adventure down the rock wall of a 60-foot cliff where you can find your inner canyoneer.

|
Next you will scramble among boulders, rainforest trees and shrubs to reach a natural waterfall known as Puohokamoa Falls. Rappel down the 50-foot cascade into a large freshwater pool and go for a restful swim. Continue your descent to a 30-foot waterfall for the final splash. The climb back to the trail is under a cool jungle canopy of native plants, ferns and trees.

If you're a true thrill-seeker, try the zip-rappel version that takes the tour to the level of 110-foot drops and includes a guided rappel over 80 feet of free space across the canyon, splashing down into a deep pool. If you would like to view sunrise at Haleakalā National Park, you will need to make a sunrise viewing reservation ahead of time at recreation.gov. The online reservation system will help to provide a quality experience at the summit during sunrise hours (3a.m. to 7a.m.). The cost is $1.50 per car. The one-day sunrise reservation will not be sold at the park but is available online, up to 60 days ahead of the date of your sunrise visit. "Hawaiian Moonshine" from the Relish Oceanside

Enjoy the revival of "Hawaiian Moonshine" Okolehao at Relish Oceanside on Kaanapali Beach. Located oceanfront at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, the restaurant bar has recently re-introduced OKOLE WOW cocktail as a signature favorite. Designed by the resort's award-winning bartender mixologist Freddie Sconfienza, the distinctive flavors feature Hawaii's ti root liqueur with hibiscus syrup, pineapple and lime. The delicious recipe is below if you want to try to make it yourself.

Legend has it that around 1790, an escaped convict from Australia taught the Hawaiians how to distill a mash of fermented ti roots in the iron try-pots used by whalers to boil blubber. The rounded pots and the resulting beverage both took the same name: Okolehao — or "iron bottom."

As well as the Okolehao cocktail the Relish Oceanside restaurant features fresh island fish, delicious steak and contemporary cuisine with island flavors scrumptiously prepared and served amid tropical oceanfront setting, along with waterfalls and flickering tiki torches.
